What is a bad ram stick

I have had issues in the past with ordering RAM, where one stick would work and the other would be bad. This often would lead to being required to return both sticks and wait for the new memory to come in, leaving you without a working machine. I took the plunge and ordered the entire 16gb in one shot and I'm glad I did, because I saved myself some money and got 2 great pieces that are working
