How rss feeds work technically

I'm still actively using RSS. I use Newsblur as my primary reader. It is pretty similar to Google reader and I think it's a lot better than feedly. The biggest problem with RSS is that you won't always any feeds with the content you're after. My solution for this is creating the feeds myself, using the Kimono Chrome extention.
